Winter Skincare tips from Dr. Jeannette Graf

My skin is getting dry and my lips are always chapped since the weather took a turn here in Southern CA. I mean, it gets down to fifty degrees...thats freezing for me! With the cold comes wind which equals dry skin. I asked Dr. Jeannette Graf- New York dermatologist and author of Stop Aging, Start Living- to give me some suggestions for winter-proofing skin. Her tips are featured below.

I love drug store products like Neutrogena Sesame Oil, Blistex for chapped lips, Lubriderm for hands, cuticle oil for the dry skin around my nail beds. I use either Olay or Suave body wash to keep my skin soft. Even though it's chilly outside, the sun is still shining and I am trying to be hyper-vigilant about sunscreen- yes, even in the winter! I spray my Peter Thomas Roth sunscreen every morning and use Olay Regenerist spf 15 or Kinerase spf 30 on my face.

Here are Dr. Graf's tips:

*Keep showers quick! Overwashing your skin particularly with hot water will strip away your moisture retaining lipid barrier quickly. The result of that is dry, dull itchy skin. Think about the effect that rain has on your house over time – how it wears away the exterior paint and insulation. That’s why people with dry skin are always feeling chilly. Shower quickly and use lukewarm water.

*Exfoliate the dead layers of skin. Exfoliating should be done gently with an effective exfoliator. Microdermabrasion scrubs, exfoliating body washes, salt scrubs, jojoba beads– just use them as directed. Do not overexfoliate! Overzealous scrubbing can result in irritation as well as disrupting the vital moisture-retaining lipid barrier. This will worsen dry skin.

*Body Wash – The type of cleanser you use on your skin will influence the way your skin looks and feels. Using a bar of detergent alkaline deodorant soap will be extremely drying to your skin. Just as detergent can dissolve dirt and grease from your clothing, so it can dissolve and break down you moisture retaining lipid layer of your skin. On the other hand, there are some excellent pH balanced body washes that are based in petrolatum which moisturize while they cleanse.

*Apply moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out of your shower to maximize the effects. My recommendation is to start with a humectant containing moisturizer such as with lactic acid or urea. These are found in the skin’s NMF (natural moisturizing factor), which is our own humectants, made by our skin. This NMF, which draws moisture into our skin, is covered by a lipid layer, which prevents the moisture from evaporating.

* Winterproof and seal the moisture by applying a humectant containing moisturizer, top it off with a rich lipid emollient. These can be cocoa butter, shea butter, glycerin or petrolatum. Doing this once a day is great but twice a day will give you the best moisturizing for your skin
**Tip – if you are in a hurry, use a dry oil satinizing body spray to cover your body quickly.

*Keep a humidifier in your room. Since winter air has a much lower relative humidity than other seasons, winter skin will naturally be drier.

Thank you Dr. Graf!

so many women suffer dry skin problem is poor cosmetic choices. In fact, she blames cosmetics above all else. I recommend them to try herbal cosmetics for once they are effective and affordable.

product containing 28000 iu of Vitamin E, hence safe of side effects – yet it works. You can find out more on

I'm not sure why but this web site is loading incredibly slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I'll
check back later on and see if the problem still exists.
