Mercury In Retrograde, Paula Froelich
Paula Froelich, former editor of Page Six, has written a fantastic novel titled Mercury In Retrograde. I started following Paula on Twitter before I knew the book was coming out. She kept Twittering (Tweeting?) about Mercury In Retrograde and I'd answer back, "Oh don't worry, my horoscope says the same thing!" I didn't know she was talking about her novel so I kept replying, completely ignorant...um, yeah. Its her book.
Mercury In Retrograde does feature little horoscopes but the book isn't about astrology. MIR follows the trials (and eventual tribulations) of three women in New York City. There's Dana-the depressed lawyer, whose husband is divorcing her, Penelope- the reporter who accidentally sets fire to her office and throws up on her boss prompting her to find a new job, Lena aka Lipstick- a socialite who learns to stand on her own two Louboutin clad feet after depending on her parents.
A fun read, Mercury In Retrograde catapults us into the world of New York City, a world I loved inhabiting for a while. Can't wait for Paula's next book!
I know you just left your perch at Page Six, what is next for you? I have heard the rumors of you going into politics, joining the Pussycat dolls, trekking to Nepal with a shaman…what is the truth?
HAHA! I am getting ready to unleash my diabolical plot to rule the world! No, seriously - I am working on two book deals, trying to write the script for MTV and am hoping to get back in front of the camera as well. I had a lot of fun on The View, Today and Bill Maher! I don't really get nervous - I was on ET and the insider for 4 years so its kind of old hat... and believe me, anyone can look good on camera -- its all about the hair and makeup people (THANK YOU ALL , by the way).
You sprinkle horoscopes throughout the book, which was a fun idea. What is your sign and do you follow your horoscope in real life? Ever had your tarot cards read?
I am a Scorpio and I never really took it all seriously (i still kind of don't) but then i met Karen throne (www.karenthrone.com) who is AMAZING... and spot on -- to the day... so. there's something to it. I got the idea more because i had had a lousy two years and was talking to karen who said, " Oh honey, Mercury is in retrograde" and I was like, "FOR TWO YEARS?!?"
What was the biggest challenge in writing Mercury in Retrograde?
Writing it and getting it done in time while holding down a full time job!
Already people (me) are eagerly anticipating your next book, Grits. Is it a memoir or a work of fiction based on your own experiences?
oh, its totally based on my own experiences! in Ohio we used to be so snobby and look down on the "rednecks in Kentucky" which we so nicely called "grits." then my mom, a strict disciplinarian, caught me skipping school and having a party at the house and sent me off to a convent for the rest of high school in KY. i was the only Jew and few virgins in my graduating class (I kid! I kid!).
I would like to think I'm intellectual but I am reading Mommywood by Tori Spelling. What kind of books do you enjoy?
I actually really love satire: anything by George Saunders, Chris Buckly, PJ O'Rourke.
Who would play you in the movie version of your life?
Um, ideally? ME! I need the paycheck! hahah. no, I don't know.
You must be so excited; the world is yours for the taking. A smart, perceptive, well-connected, talented writer…how could life get any better?
THANK YOU! I am so excited -- really just so happy... and I can't wait for the next phase. as for it getting better - my bank account could use a boost. heh.
